 Help with Searching:

How do I search?
The basics of searching using Athenus should be fairly straightforward. First you select the category to be searched from the subject-bar, selecting for instance 'Web' (which is searched by default) if you're looking for websites; 'Publications' if you'd like to search for journals, papers and documents; or 'News' if you'd like to check media sources.
If you're not sure exactly what you're looking for, try selecting the 'Browse' option to take a guided tour of the websites we index.

Frequently Asked Questions about Search

- Can I use boolean operators in my searches?
Indeed, boolean operators such as 'AND', 'NOT' and 'OR' are supported, and are not case sensitive. So, for example:

Searching for 'civil AND engineering' will return all results that contain both civil and engineering.
Searching for 'civil OR engineering' will return all results that contain either civil or engineering (non exclusively)
Searching for 'civil NOT engineering' will return all results that contain civil without engineering

Combining these operators can lead to powerful search combinations, for instance:

Searching for 'NOT (civil AND engineering)' will return all results that do not contain both civil and engineering

Bear in mind that the order of the evaluation by default is left-to-right, but this can be changed by using parentheses.

- How do I search for an exact phrase?
Use quotes around the phrase you are searching for. For instance a query on '"civil engineering"' will return all documents that contain that exact phrase.

- Can I use wildcards?
Of course!! To search for all words beginning with 'enginee', you would enter 'enginee*' into the search book.

- How are results ranked?
The rank of Athenus.com search results is closely tied both to the overall site popularity and the relevance of the search keywords to the sites in question. Unlike other search engines, we do not sell the top positions in our search results to advertisers. Additionally, we take proprietary steps to eliminate sites that 'spam' keywords and content from our results.

- How can I improve my site's ranking?
As with most search engines, the best thing to do is simply to improve the targeting and quality of your content. Additionally, you might consider making proper use of META tags in the headers of your webpages. Also, make sure your robots.txt file is correctly configured to allow AthenusBot to index your pages
We also offer advertising opportunities for those sites trying to get more visibility in the engineering and science sectors. Banner and text ads are displayed on the top and to the side of search results and are naturally targeted to our audience. This is an effective way to use Athenus.com to gain new customers and users, and may work best for sites which do not rank high in more general searches.
